City’s Second largest union backs Kenneally for At-Large seat on the Boston City Council
Boston, MA - Monday, April 27, 2009 - The Boston Presidents Committee of the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Council 93 announced today that it has endorsed Andrew Kenneally for one of the two vacant at-large seats on the Boston City Council. This is a big and early endorsement for Kenneally as AFSCME represents over two thousand workers in the city of Boston.
“I am honored to have the endorsement of AFSCME Council 93. I had the opportunity to work with AFSCME members during my five years working as a top aide on the Boston City Council. They are the people you see every day. They work hard and don’t get the credit others do, though they are essential to making our city run,” Kenneally said.
“Andrew is a tireless advocate for working families and for the protection of workers’ rights. We are impressed with his ideas on how we can get Boston Moving Again and believe these tough times demand someone with Andrew’s knowledge, experience, and vision. We are proud to put our full support behind him,” said the Boston Presidents Committee of AFSCME Council 93 in a prepared statement.
The Boston Presidents Committee of AFSCME Council 93 is comprised of leaders within 13 local AFSCME Council 93 unions. These locals include workers employed within a wide-range of city departments including: parks and recreation; public works; inspectional services; parking enforcement; transportation; civilian employees within the city’s police and fire departments; and technical employees, engineers and supervisors from multiple city departments.
The committee also includes union leaders from AFSCME locals representing Boston Public Library workers; school cafeteria workers; corrections officers from the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department; and employees of the Boston Public Health Commission.
