Boston, MA - Wednesday, June 10, 2009 - The leadership of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 2222 announced today that it has endorsed Andrew Kenneally for one of the two vacant at-large seats on the Boston City Council.
The endorsement from the IBEW, which is among the largest AFL-CIO unions, reflects workers’ confidence in Kenneally’s understanding of how to create the jobs of the future.
The announcement also comes on the heels of a major endorsement in April from the Boston Presidents Committee of the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME). Among the new candidates for the two vacant at-large City Council seats, Kenneally is currently the leader both in fundraising and endorsements.
“I am honored to have the endorsement of the IBEW, Local 2222. I had the opportunity to work with members of a diverse array of unions during my five years as a top aide on the Boston City Council, including the IBEW. They are the people you see every day. They work in sectors that will be crucial to our economic progress, especially in technology. I look forward to working with members of the IBEW as we get to work creating jobs during these challenging times,” Kenneally said.
“Andrew is a forward-thinking individual, and understands that the key to growth lies in innovation. He knows the work we do and the need to implement new technologies such as FIOs to ensure that Boston remains competitive in the global economy. Andrew has always been a tireless advocate for working families and the protection of workers’ rights. Aside from a passion to help people and his strong roots in Boston, Andrew has the knowledge, experience and vision to help Boston through these tough times to make our great city even greater. We are proud to put our full support behind him,” said the President of IBEW, Local 2222, Myles Calvey.
The IBEW represents approximately 725,000 workers worldwide in a wide variety of industries, including: utilities, construction, telecommunications, broadcasting, manufacturing, railroads, and government. The IBEW represents more than 4,000 telecommunications workers in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
